Harley-Davidson got it’s humble start when William Harley and Arthur Davidson built the first production motorcycle in 1903. The motobike that was built was a racing bike. Harley-Davidson hired their first employee last 1905 when they won the first race. The first motorcylce was sold to the Detroit Police Department in 1908 also it was utilized as a police service. They became flourishing that they are able to construct a 6 story factory building and started to export their motorcycles to the Japan.
H-D entered the national racing circuit in 1914 and became termed “the wrecking crew”. In 1917, part of the motorcyles they produced were sold the military and was used as military and civilian bikes.
In 1918, half of the bikes were shipped to Germany and had become the military service in World War. That it was Corporal Roy Holts, the first soldier that used the H-D motorcycle. 1920 symbolizes the year that the motorcycle company is the biggest in the world in the motorcycle industry, and has over 2,000 dealers in 67 countries worldwide.
THe competitors of Harley-Davidson disappeared in 1931 except for the Indian Motorcycle Company. These two companies were the only remaining motocrycle companies in United States until 1953.
As being the world enters into World War 2, so does Harley return back into Military motorcycle development, and the service school is turned back into the military motorcycle service school, also called the Quartermaster School for military mechanics. The Harley-Davidson Motorcycle were hardly reached out by the public during this time.
